Master Graduation Assignment: Modeling of a heat exchanger using fluid and solid simulations

Join DAF Trucks to develop and validate advanced CFD models for heat exchangers in engine systems. Contribute to optimizing heat transfer and reducing emissions in real-world applications

Job description

Heat exchangers are essential components in managing heat transfer between fluids at different temperatures, such as hot exhaust gases and cold coolant liquids. Accurately modeling these systems is challenging due to textured surfaces designed to enhance turbulent heat transfer and the occurrence of phase changes caused by significant temperature differences. Improving these models is key to optimizing heat exchanger design, enhancing packaging efficiency, and reducing engine emissions.

As an intern, you will begin by conducting a thorough literature review on heat exchanger modeling. You will then develop and validate simulation models using both existing research and experimental data. The first phase will focus on fundamental heat transfer mechanisms, with emphasis on boundary layer behavior and turbulence modeling. In the second phase, you will create and calibrate a simplified heat exchanger model based on components used in DAF engines. There is also the opportunity to explore advanced topics such as phase transitions (boiling and condensation), thermal inertia, surface roughness effects, and changes in heat transfer characteristics due to component aging.

Your profile

We are looking for a self-motivated Master's student with a strong academic background in fluid and solid mechanics, and hands-on experience with CFD simulations. Familiarity with diesel engine technology is considered an asset. Excellent command of English is required to collaborate effectively in our international environment.

You are currently pursuing a Master’s degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Applied Physics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Automotive Engineering
Please note: We can only consider candidates who are enrolled at an educational institution for the entire duration of the graduation assignment.
