Simulation of valve wagging during exhaust brake, a fluid-structure interaction problem

  • Fulltime Fulltime
  • Education level Master
  • Contract type Internship contract

Job description

Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is a coupled problem where the state of the fluid depends on the state of the solid and vice versa. The project is to simulate the two-way coupled problem of valve wagging. During engine brake the exhaust valve oscillates due to the uneven high flow pressure applied to it. This motion modifies the gap in which the gas escapes the combustion chamber and consequently the pressure field and the valve motion.

The candidate will start by reviewing the literature available on this topic. The candidate will then build and validate the simulation models against literature and test results. In the first phase the fluid-structure interaction will be solved within StarCCM+ package. In a second phase the CFD and the FEM software will be coupled. Several aspects will be investigated: turbulence models, coupling methods, mesh, contact definition etc.
