Job description

The control system of modern cars and trucks consists of a network of many small electronic control units (ECU).  This network is limited in its ability to scale for more complex features like self-driving or platooning. One solution to this scaling issue is to replace these smaller ECUs with larger high-performance computers (HPC). The goal of this assignment is to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of such an HPC platform and build a demo application.

This task includes:

  • Research the differences between a real-time ECU and a (Linux-based) HPC;
  • Selection of a programming language and middleware solution;
  • Implementation of a demo application that interacts with other devices in the truck.

Possible extensions:
  • Automated testing of the demo application in simulation and in hardware;
  • Demonstrate debugging capabilities of the hardware and middleware platform;
  • Investigate performance limitations of the HPC platform;
  • Investigate the flexibility of the HPC platform using for example an hypervisor or containers.

Your profile

For this assignment we are looking for a Bachelor student ICT, Computer Science or Software Engineering.

You possess the following competences: cooperation, creativity, planning and organizing, problem analysis.

Embedded Engineering is primarily located in Eindhoven and has an office in Pune, India and has over 120 highly skilled people today. Together we deliver world class engineering in the domains of engine controllers and vehicle controllers. Next to that, focusing on common software development, Embedded Engineering works closely together with PACCAR Embedded Engineering located in Renton (near Seattle), the USA.

The products developed within Embedded Engineering are applied on DAF trucks but also in the famous PACCAR brands Kenworth and Peterbilt. Through component sales our products are used by leading bus and coach manufacturers.
