Zero Waste to Landfill

Lloyd’s Register confirms 0% dump of waste materials

At the end of January 2009, DAF Trucks N.V. received the official statement from Lloyd’s Register Netherlands that waste to landfill has been reduced to zero. With this achievement, DAF underlines its leading position in the field of environmental care.

For Lloyd’s Register, DAF Trucks N.V. has been the first company for which it has verified and positively assessed the policy and realization of ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ and for which it has issued an official declaration. By operating according to a policy of ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’, a company no longer disposes of its waste to landfill, but instead chooses for further processing it. All waste is recycled, used as raw material or building material or used for the generation of energy through incineration. The policy verified by Lloyd’s Register applies to the DAF production locations in The Netherlands and Belgium.

Alternatives to waste

To assure ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’, DAF’s waste flows are analyzed and - together with its partners in the field of waste disposal – several alternatives in the field of re-use or recycling are continuously reviewed. For instance water/oil mixtures, acid waste water and alkaline waters are purified and the residue is preserved as electricity and heat. Another example is the treatment of steel shot: waste resulting from steel blasting and plasma cutting. This steel shot is re-used in road construction projects or other civil works, or recycled, for  instance in the form of improver. Even coffee grounds are fermented to biogas, whereupon the residue of the fermentation is used as soil conditioner, or incinerated with energy recuperation.

With ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ DAF aims to further reduce the burden on our living environment.
