DAF 2600 celebrates anniversary at the BedrijfsautoRAI 2012

04/04/2012

The DAF 2600 returns to the BedrijfsautoRAI fifty years after its introduction. The truck, which was known for its unparalleled driver comfort, was first shown there in 1962. The ‘Mother of the International Road Transport’ is exhibited from 17 to 21 April at the BedrijfsautoRAI 2012 in the Hall 4 at the Classics Square.

The DAF 2600 was the ‘star of the show’ at the 45th RAI in 1962. Equipped with an 11.1 litre, 6 cylinder diesel engine with maximum output of 220 hp, the truck was revolutionary in means of driver comfort and was considered the new standard for international transport. The cube-shaped cab offered the driver maximum space and comfort. In addition, the 2600 had a remarkably large glass area for excellent visibility. The driver also had luxurious, sprung and adjustable seats, whereby the passenger seat was fully reclining. The dashboard was very ergonomic and the heating and ventilation of high quality for optimum driver comfort.

Sleeping facilities

The DAF 2600 was one of the first trucks in its class available with a sleeper cab. The two beds, of which the upper one could be folded up against the back of the cab, offered the driver and passenger unprecedented comfort. This made the truck the logical choice for long-distance haulage. The DAF 2600 was leading in driver comfort, just as the DAF XF105 is today.

Up to 1974, over 15,000 DAF 2600s were produced. The tractor unit exhibited at the
BedrijfsautoRAI is part of collection on display at the DAF Museum in Eindhoven.
